Search tools for kids feature friendly, colorful interfaces and simple navigation. They seek to limit results to "kid-friendly" sites, either through human supervision or through filtering technology.

"Standard" search tools (e.g., AltaVista, Google, Yahoo!) are not designed with kids in mind, but often feature a "Safe Search" or "Family Friendly Filter" option.

Filtering technology is imperfect. Do not assume that a filtered search tool is a fool-proof way to avoid adult content. Do not assume the reverse, either; sites you may find appropriate and relevant may sometimes be blocked by these filters.

As always, be prepared to try your query on several search tools, especially if you suspect that a filter may be frustrating your efforts. Kids will benefit from learning to use a variety of search interfaces and strategies.
